Flattening the Flatiron

Hi all. I've longed to hike to the top of the Flatiron since I heard about it a couple of years ago when I first moved out here. So, I've committed myself to doing it late this winter or very early spring.

I feel pretty confident I could do it by myself, I'm in decent shape and have some experience hiking. My biggest fear would be not finding the route to the top (though it sounds like a straight shot up the draw). So I'd much rather do it with someone (or group) familiar with it. Are there any formal or informal groups or individuals with a trip planned to the Flatiron that wouldn't mind showing the way to someone?

I'd totally do it with you, but I don't feel skilled enough to hike to Flatiron..darn. You may find this website useful www.hikearizona.com
    Hope that helps!

Even I'm a little nervous about it, but at the same time I feel the need to face a challenge. And I'll face it alone if I must.

Thanks for the link ma'am, will definitely check it out.

I've done all the major trails in Lost Dutchman park and even attempted (unknowingly) to make the ascent to Flatiron. To tell you the truth, I didn't get too far because I realized the trail was much too advanced. I quickly made my journey downward. :)

I climb by myself 100% of the time and find the experience to be extremely cathartic. No matter what anyone says about danger, I just can't imagine climbing with anyone but myself. Perhaps it's because I haven't looked for the right hiking partner or because I'm too narrow minded. Whatever the case, maybe I can get over the fact that I love being alone? Who knows?

I only started hiking a year ago, yet started into looking into hiking websites and precautions at that same time. I was really surprised at how many people were adamant on hiking with someone else, even on easy or moderate trails. In a way, I can definitely understand why. However, in my opinion, if you're that worried about becoming a victim of hiking on an "easy" trail, perhaps you shouldn't be hiking it in the first place.

It sounds to me like you're trying to avoid taking any undue risks with your safety, and are well aware of your limits. So you can probably put the doubts out of your head and just enjoy your time alone. I know what those experiences are like, when the universe is a place of perfect peacefulness. One of my favorite memories ever is of a quiet sunset on a trail back in Austin. I'd hiked into the greenbelt alone one day after work, and was enjoying a rest on a large boulder in a dry rocky creekbed. A man with a saxophone had perched himself high on a bluff to the east, and I watched the red and golden hues of the sunset climb the bluff as he sat playing his slow and somber solos. I never met him, didn't need to. It was beautiful.

Something within compels me to climb that blasted rock. A friend in town for a couple of days and I drove the Apache Trail from Lake Roosevelt last week. It was well after dark when we passed Superstition Mountain. I could see its shape rising against the moonlit sky, and found it both terrifying and fascinating. It was saying something to me. I don't know what, but I intend to go back and listen some more.

I've done it a couple of times and it's tough but not impossible to do. The trail can become confusing at times but it becomes a straight shot after a bit. Keep trying!
